the suppliers - a part of the wonki family

Formpress and the island of Öland

The last summers the island of Öland has become a special place for me and my kids thanks to our friends who kindly keeps squeezing us into their summer house year after year.

Last summer, while my friend had a bad ear infection and offered to take all the kids anyway, I took a drive down to Färjestaden to meet up with Christian Mörnestedt at Formpress.

I didn’t need much time to realise that the people working there are proud of their family business, their quality of work and that they share my strive for a more sustainable production. We ended up talking about transports, packing materials and all those small things that matter too.

To have a walk around their factory was a real treat. Many of their skilful staff have been working there for a long time.

A ll I have received from Formpress are smiles, kind words and excellent help. That is why they became the first supplier for Wonki Studio.

MATERIALS and production

Neither water nor solvents are being used in the production.

Whatever waste there is, is recycled.

The components of the trays, coasters and cutting boards are; birch veneer or MDF, glue, varnish, decor and paper.

Glue, varnish and decoration consist of melamine-dipped paper. Melamine is an organic compound and it’s what makes the product durable and water-resistant. The melamine is tightly bound in the products, which is checked by having them undergo a Food Contact Test.

FSC®-certificate

Formpress is certified according to the FSC® standard. This means that they only purchase wooden products from  FSC®-certified suppliers, which guarantees that a wood based product uses materials from responsibly grown forests. It indicates a social and environmental responsibility for the forests of the world and the people and animals that work and live there. That way they take responsibility for using wood from forests that are cultivated responsibly and with a long term perspective. To read more, visit www.fsc.org .

Circular centre and their awesome work

At a meeting with Johanna Nilsson (www.slowfashion.se) I kept telling her that my dream was to work with a supplier in Sweden where I could be a part of integration for real. In 2015/2016 many people sought refuge in Sweden and I ended up meeting a lot of families, and kids who had come on their own, at my work as a school doctor. All of them came with big hopes and a dream to start living a new life.

Then Johanna told me about Circular centre. A few days later I called and after visiting them in Jönköping and talking to Mariana Morosanu about what her thoughts were when she started Circular centre I realised they were just what I was looking for.

Circular centre and Wonki Studio share the strong belief that all humans have equal value and that every person has the inner power and will to take responsibility.

Circular centre takes other people’s waste and turn it into new sustainable products. While doing so they create jobs for those who faces the hardest challenge to find work in Sweden and start an independent new life - women with a foreign background.

But to really be able to work and become independent they take things one step further and give the women:

  • Work training in sewing, restaurants, cafés, shops and conferences.

  • Parental support, homework assistance and after school activities for the women’s kids.

  • Mentorship and coaching

  • Swedish lessons

  • Help to get a driver’s licence

This is why Circular centre will be my next supplier and I hope that we will become long time partners.
